Ahmadabad, city in western India, in Gujarat State, on the Sabarmati River.It lies along the Sabarmati River, about 275 miles (440 km) north of Bombay. The city was founded in AD 1411 by the Muslim ruler of Gujarat, Sultan Ahmad Shah.
An important industrial and commercial center, Ahmadabad is especially noted for the manufacture of cotton textiles. Silk fabrics, soap, glass, carpets, tobacco products, matches, and high-quality brocades and metal and wood articles are also produced in the city. Other light industries produce pharmaceuticals, vegetable oil, flour.
Ahmadabad was the capital of Gujarat State from 1960 to 1970, when the state capital was transferred to Gandhinagar. Population 2,876,710 (1991), metropolitan area, 3,312,216.
