Amritsar, city in northern India, in Punjab State.It lies about 15 miles (25 km) east of the border with Pakistan.It is also the centre of Sikhism and the site of the Sikhs' principal place of worship, the Harimandir, or Golden Temple.
The city, surrounded by a fertile region where grain, sugarcane, and cotton are produced, is an important trade, transportation, and manufacturing center with extensive textile and chemical industries. Amritsar was founded in 1574 by Ram Das, a guru of the Sikh religion.
northern section of the city is the Ram Bagh, a large, well-maintained park that contains the summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Population: (1991) 708,835.
