Srinagar, city in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir capital of the Indian-controlled portion administered as Jammu and Kashmir State. Located on the Jhelum River.
Srinagar is also a center for the manufacture of carpets, silk, and wool. In and around the city are many old buildings and ruins.
Srinagar are a 7th-century temple and a 16th-century fort, and nearby are extensive Buddhist ruins. Srinagar was founded in the 6th century. Population (1991) 595,000.
